Schempf https://calebtaylorstudio.com/conSTRUCTS-reSTRUCTURES Tue, 08 Jun 2021 00:22:49 +0000 Caleb Taylor Art https://calebtaylorstudio.com/conSTRUCTS-reSTRUCTURES conSTRUCTS &nbsp;| &nbsp;reSTRUCTURES con:&nbsp;persuade (someone) to do or believe something, typically by use of a deception.&nbsp; “with” or “together” STRUCT: to build In July 2017, I began this body of work while in-residence at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. &nbsp;I became attuned to the disparate ideologies in the ‘Big Easy’ to those found in my hometown Kansas City, specifically regarding the ethics of place, history of commerce, and dynamics related to urban restoration. &nbsp;I found New Orleans to be a city collaged together because of displacement and generations of independent renovations.&nbsp; To locate myself within this history, I began looking at aerial images of the city in hopes of better understanding the logic of civic choice-making and order that, from street-level, was obscured by layers of overgrowth.&nbsp;&nbsp;Google Earth helped me reduce the ornate Creole architecture to a modular, structural language that countered my observations with concrete precision.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In response, I began a series of décollaged photographs that investigated the act of extraction for perceptual effect. &nbsp;The works in the conSTRUCT and reSTRUCTURES Series are produced by&nbsp; folding architectonic paper sculptures and documenting them in arrangements that respond to observations of constructed spaces and rhythms within urban grids. &nbsp;Once captured and printed, the photographs are cut into and layered to define deceptive passages of fractured geometry, associating the work with the paralleled processes of building and rebuilding. &nbsp;The resulting images depict scenarios that closely mediate the nuances between site-specificity, abstraction, representation, fact, and fiction. The resulting installation is an organic extension of Mühsam’s and Taylor’s studio practices, both of which employ the architectonic structure and collage as central factors in their painting processes and decision-making. As a consequence, cutting and reassembling, solids and voids, are the determining gestures that drive the dialogue between these two artists, a conversation visualized in the interplay of each painter’s signature languages, enacted directly on the walls of the gallery. The viewer is greeted in the hallway by a hanging plane that breaks the gallery’s threshold and leads into the exhibition.&nbsp; This plane is both the literal entry into the space and the point where images begin to mediate, interrupt, contextualize, and invigorate the venue. Images have the potential to enter into dialogue with architectural structures, and influence how spaces are physically and visually navigated.&nbsp; Walking the perimeter of a room allows one to experience the totality of a space, taking a physical survey of place and location - embracing its volume.&nbsp; In contrast, bisecting a space to its distant corners allows viewers to take ownership over a room in ways that are immediate. Caleb Taylor’s practice has increasingly focused on architectonic structures and their relationships to constructed environments, place, and dynamics connected to ways of seeing. Fixed Positions was made in collaboration with architect Christopher Spaw, and challenges relational qualities of space and architecture with new concerns for site-specificity.&nbsp; Their use of monumental geometry narrates the installation and takes viewers through a physical survey where the awareness of traveled pathways become the content.&nbsp; The making of their work reveals complex conversations addressing dualities of images and objects and perception and understanding as important shared themes in this exhibition. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; ...and their shadows ‘...and their shadows’ is an installation built in collaboration with high school advanced art students featuring&nbsp; a multi-channel projection made using traditional darkroom photogram processes to investigate the relationship of abstraction, site-specificity and time. &nbsp;The exhibition transforms the space with a side-by-side projection (2 screens, 8’h x 25’w overall) playing infinite loops of over 200 grayscale, abstract photograms at varied times to produce a sequence of architectonic compositions beyond the artist’s control.&nbsp; Finger prints, scratches, and developer marks from the darkroom printing process are left as painterly mark. These ‘sites’ include found books and images, architectural interiors, building facades, and gallery venues. The Cast in Place installations began when I was invited to respond to a venue with an irregular footprint and carpeted walls.&nbsp; I found simple ways to influence the space that shifted how I thought about making; stacking and propping materials, integrating structures and furniture I found in the gallery, and responding to the history of the room - carpet rips became edges, stains on the shag walls peeked out from behind framed works, a projector screen became form, door windows created sight lines - giving context to choices I may otherwise make intuitively.&nbsp; I constructed large panels to conceal and recontextualize the carpeted walls, using windows and openings in these planes that brought features into illusionistic and constructed dialogues. My mother operated an interior painting and wallpapering business for over two decades that reimagined many interiors on the campus where I initially presented Cast In Place. To acknowledge this history, I found it necessary to wallpaper in the gallery to connect ideas of labor and family to this work.&nbsp; This brings personal ideas into my work in new and meaningful ways that can be adapted to changing sites. The following images are from the second iteration of Cast in Place built in response to a white slate that places elements from the first installation into new relationships.&nbsp; This presentation integrates reoriented forms, architectural fragments mined from a demolition site, and photograph collages depicting surfaces and structures from adjacent urban spaces.&nbsp; This body of work remains an experiment in recursive ways of shaping architecture.
